Winning the fight! It is taking all of Devon Nicholson's energy, and the support of all his loved ones to beat HepC

Devon NicholsonOTTAWA – Devon Nicholson is a fighter. Over the past four years, since meeting Devon, NetNewsLedger has documented the ups, and the downs in his career. The highs have been very high. The lows have been life-threatening.

As a wrestler, Devon in the persona of Hannibal is honestly terrifying. Hannibal will do anything. That has ranged from a punch out in the Prince Arthur Hotel at a pre-match press conference, with hardcore wrestling legend Terry Funk, to amazing matches some here in Thunder Bay at the Fort William Gardens.

Today, the news is headed on another, hopeful high. Nicholson has been sharing his treatment for Hepatitis C using Incivek, an experimental cure.

Nicholson has completed the treatment and took some time to do an interview.

How does it feel for your treatment to be over:

It feels great but surreal.  I started treatment on October 15th 2012 and finished June 24th.  I went through 4 seasons on this medication so I’m very used to feeling sick all the time.  I’m looking forward to things beginning to return to normal.

The Rocky movie series inspired many – Devon Nicholson is a fighter too!

How long before you’ll be able to return to serious training:

I’m going to start lifting weights more seriously in about 2 weeks and take it slow to avoid injury.  My goal is to be in good enough shape to start training in MMA again by the fall.

Is MMA a discipline you’d like to get into after treatment:

I enjoy training in it but I’m not going to think too much about competitive sports until I get assurance from my doctors that I’m permanently cured and able to be licenced to compete in sports anywhere.  There is an over 90% chance that I will be cured at this point however I don’t want to set myself up for disappointment.  It was an extremely hard blow to me for my last treatment not to have worked.

Are you confident that the treatment is going to work this time?

I believe in my heart it will.  I’m going to do everything possible to keep my body healthy in the meantime.  I will continue to eat right and take vitamin supplements, drink lots of green tea and water and of course exercise which is great for the body.

Congratulations on completing the treatment Devon.  Net News Ledger hopes to see you back in athletics in the future.  Maybe even in a wrestling ring in Thunder Bay?

You can never say never with professional wrestling.  I’m not going to get too far ahead of myself just yet.  Thunder Bay is a great city, and I appreciate all the support they have given me over the years.  It is a city that appreciates both amateur and pro wrestling styles, and the scenery up there is absolutely breathtaking.
