Hydrail which is rail powered by hydrogen fuel cells offers a greener way of moving forward with rail. It also does not require the overhead wire or electrified ‘third rail’. In New York City during Hurricane Sandy, the Subway was shut down and flooded. A great deal of the work in restoring service after a hurricane or tropical storm is in restoration of overhead wires. Hydrail powered transit would be faster to get online again as there is no need for expensive wires.
Asia and Europe along with the United States Military are leading the way in hydrail innovation.
Minister Murray shared the current Ontario perspective.
In October 2007 former Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty promised Ontarians that “Ontario will lead the world” in the development of hydrogen technology.
The Ontario government might not be guiding Ontario to leading the world, but with careful planning we could.
