Disaster relief fundTHUNDER BAY – $1,255,244 raised by Disaster Relief Committee. The sum of donations raised toward the flood relief over the past five months and two weeks represents an amazing effort. The total is not yet at the goal of $5 million dollars, and may not get there.

The total money raised is likely to have some arm chair critics complaining. The reality is however the efforts by the volunteer committee is impressive. Compare their efforts to, for example the United Way which has a full year and a lot of infrastructure behind its fundraising efforts. The United Way in 2011 raised $2.5 million.

The efforts of the Disaster Relief Committee in raising $1.2 million in a far shorter time frame is impressive.

Those efforts have been hampered in some ways by reports of law suits, and concerns raised by critics about their efforts. The project volunteers have continued forward doing the best they can, and still are raising an impressive amount of needed money.

The funds raised are matched by the Provincial Government.

Thunder Bay Disaster Relief – How to Donate:

A charitable tax receipt will be issued for donations upon request. All funds raised for the Thunder Bay & Area Disaster Relief Fund will be matched by the Province through the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program.

All existing funds raised and any new donations to the Salvation Army, the Canadian Red Cross, and the United Way for the flood relief efforts will be transfered directly into the Thunder Bay & Area Disaster Relief Fund.
