THUNDER BAY – “The Liberals have shut down the Legislature because they don’t want us to ask more questions,” states C MPP Rob Leone. They’re afraid of what we may find out,” Leone complained. “The public’s outraged at what’s happened, and they should be. The Liberals have shown their contempt for taxpayers by wasting their money and then hiding from scandal.”

The first crew of Ontario Liberal leadership candidates have made their way through Thunder Bay. Across the province the Liberals are focusing on who will be the next leader of their party. For the Ontario Progressive Conservatives, the real issue is that the needed work that the Ontario Legislature should be doing is not getting done.

“This Monday, Ontarians would have learned the results of an investigation into the Liberals’ $1-billion gas plant scandal – had the Liberals not shut down the Legislature to run away from accountability”, charges Leone. “On November 19, the Finance Committee should have reported back to the Legislature on the Liberals’ seat-saver program,” stated Leone.

“But when Dalton McGuinty quit and shut down the House, he killed the investigation into his own government’s scandalous misuse of $1-billion in taxpayers’ money to cancel the Mississauga and Oakville gas plants.”  The PC MPP says “The investigation was intended to look into the Liberals’ refusal to release all documents relating to the gas plants, the true cost to taxpayers for these decisions, and the extent of Liberal political interference on the matter”.

According to the PCs, the last batch of documents released revealed “Project Vapour,” a codename used in an attempt to hide the Ontario Liberal Party’s interference in government business. According to the documents, the Liberals had told the Ontario Power Authority they were willing to pay up to $1.2 billion to cancel the Oakville gas plant.

By refusing to recall the House, the Liberals have put a government that was failing to do its job on autopilot, leaving overspending to continue and the debt to accumulate, Leone added.

“Ontarians deserve a government that’s accountable to taxpayers – not a government that wastes public funds and then runs away to hold a Leadership race,” Leone concluded. “The Liberals need to immediately recall the House, so that MPPs can get back to work puttingOntarioon track to economic prosperity.”
