THUNDER BAY – The Lakehead University Thunderwolves women’s wrestling team travels to London this weekend to compete at the Harry Geris Memorial Wrestling Duals, hosted by Western University. This the second year of the tournament’s existence and will mark the first year that Lakehead has been invited. It will serve as a fabulous opportunity for Lakehead’s women wrestlers to compete and get a look at some of the best wrestlers in the CIS, and some visiting from the United States as well.
The women will weigh-in Friday afternoon, with the action getting underway on Saturday morning at Western’s Alumni Hall.
One T-Wolf to watch will be Megan Smith, who took gold at the McMaster Open earlier this month (Nov 3) in the 48 kg division. Rookie Nichole Kinzel will also be contending in the 51kg division and will be looking to take down OUA gold medalist Jade Papke (Guelph), who she lost the gold medal to at the McMaster Open, settling for silver. Not to be overlooked will be Kelsey Dayler, who also took silver at the McMaster Open in the 72 kg division.
Says coach Brock Curtis, “I expect our women to do well, but they will be in for some very tough matches. They’re in good shape and are ready to challenge themselves. The most important thing is that they take what they learn from the experience and work to fix things in practice. Our team has this attitude, and it will be easy for them to get a lot out of this weekend.”
