THUNDER BAY – Is winter on the way? According to Environment Canada, it is very possible that winter is about make a first major appearance in the region. A low pressure system developing over the American Rockies is forecast to track towards Lake Superior over the next couple of days.
An area of snow ahead of the low is expected to spread into Northwestern Ontario beginning early Saturday. Snow may be heavy at times with total local amounts of 10 to 15 cm possible.
Brisk northeasterly winds accompanying the storm may lower visibility in snow and blowing snow. Late Saturday, there is also
the possibility of a change from snow to ice pellets and a risk of freezing rain over some areas.
As the storm is still developing, there is considerable uncertainty in its track as well as type and amount of precipitation.
Environment Canada meteorologists are watching the evolution of this storm closely as watches or warnings may be required.
