THUNDER BAY – Crimebeat – The City of Thunder Bay is calling for nominations for the second annual Mayor’s Community Safety & Crime Prevention Awards, presented by TBayTel and the Thunder Bay Crime Prevention Council. The awards will be presented on Nov. 5, in Council Chambers at City Hall.
The City of Thunder Bay has made community safety and crime prevention top priorities to enhance the quality of life for all residents. The first annual awards last November recognized the work of nine groups and individuals who made a difference in our community through programs and services that promote community safety and crime prevention.
“The awards provide an opportunity to celebrate our success stories and demonstrate the Crime Prevention Council’s impact on influencing attitudes and raising awareness about how we can make a difference to improve community safety and address the root causes of crime,” said Mayor Hobbs. “I’m expecting to see a lot of nominations as we build upon last year’s achievements”.
2012 Award Categories:
Community Hero Award – For an outstanding individual effort that contributes to a safer community. Sponsor: Simpson Street Business Improvement Area.
Business Award – For the contribution of a business to community safety through partnering with a local group or organization. Sponsor: Brook/McIlroy
Media Award – For outstanding contribution by an individual in media relations or a media group who has raised public awareness/understanding of community safety and crime prevention issues. Sponsor: Shout Media.
Education Award – For outstanding contributions by an individual in the field of education for raising awareness of, or leading a project toward, improved community safety or crime prevention. Sponsor: Métis Nation of Ontario.
Youth Leadership Award – For outstanding contributions by a child or youth who demonstrates and encourages active participation in community safety or crime prevention. The young person is a positive leader in a project within their school or community. Sponsor: Union Gas.
Enforcement Professional Award – For outstanding contribution by an Enforcement Professional toward community safety or crime prevention. Sponsor: Apex Investigation & Security.
Outstanding Community Project Award – For outstanding results in community safety or crime prevention through partnership and collaboration. Up to three projects may be awarded. Sponsors: Wasaya Airways LP, Thunder Bay Police Services Board and the City of Thunder Bay. A prize of $1,000 will be awarded to each organization recognized to be used for community safety initiatives.
Nominations will be accepted until 4:30 pm on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012. Awards will be presented in Council Chambers at City Hall on Nov. 5, 2012, during Ontario’s Crime Prevention Week.
Award recipients will receive a certificate and recognition for their achievement at the Awards ceremony, a short video documenting their achievements, and acknowledgement in the MyTBay Citizen Newsletter, City website and Awards Souvenir Program.
