THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay’s Michael Picard is the first Canadian performer to be nominated for the LA Comedy Awards. He is also the first to be nominated for more than one category in the same year, one in the area of stand-up comedy and also for best variety act. Max Worthington, executive producer of The LA Comedy Awards said “Michael’s stand-up comedy was spectacular!”
Picard was the closing act for the July 7th red carpet event at The Hollywood Studio Bar and Grill on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood, California. Also in on the stage were last year’s winner Al De Bente, Karen Knotts (Daughter of the Late Don Knotts) who is nominated for best one woman show, and impressionist Dave Alan who is nominated for Best Impressionist for 2012.
Nominees and Award recipients are carefully selected by the community, industry producers, by email and voting widgets the Academy Awards uses, on the merits of commercial success, talent, popularity and the potential for commercial success for new faces. As a finalist for the LA Comedy Awards, with 2 more nomination red carpet events, winners will be announced shortly before the March 2013 Red Carpet event in Hollywood. The Awards themselves are cut by the same artist who makes the Walk of Fame Stars and resemble the famous Hollywood walk of fame plaques.
“I was speechless by the nomination and after overcoming my speechlessness and had a great time performing while in Hollywood and was overwhelmed with the entire experience while in Hollywood,” stated Picard.
“I hope to perform as much as possible over the next few months in preparation for the finals in March 2013 so I can also be the first Canadian to win an LA Comedy Award,” added Picard.
