OTTAWA – Thunder Bay – Rainy River Member of Parliament John Rafferty took his seat today at the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security (SECU) in the House of Commons. “With three border crossings in our riding and a higher than average rate of violent crime in Thunder Bay this committee is of vital importance to Thunder Bay – Rainy River,” Rafferty said. “I’m proud to have been appointed by New Democrat Leader Thomas Mulcair to sit on this committee on a full-time basis.”
Each parliamentary committee examines federal government operations and legislation pertaining to specific Ministries, departments, and agencies, and the Public Safety and National Security (SECU) committee is no different. The SECU oversees work carried out by; Public Safety Canada, the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA), Correctional Services Canada, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) among others.
“Serving on this committee is another way that I will be able to keep and promote our local issues and priorities on the national agenda,” Rafferty said. The SECU committee meets approximately two times per week while the House of Commons is in session.
