Winter Road in Attawapiskat THUNDER BAY – The warm spring weather has put an end to most travel on the winter roads. Quickly deteriorating Winter Road conditions due to abnormally warm weather has the potential to strand motorists attempting to travel to or from Northern Ontario.

Nishnawbe-Aski Police have had several incidents where vehicles had become stuck on a winter road in the North West Region.

Most northern communities have closed their winter roads and travel at this time at risk. Persons choosing to travel should ensure they bring adequate supplies of food and clothing with them in their vehicles. Most important is that travelers ensure that either police or someone knows of their travel plans and expected arrival time and location.

In the photograph, the winter road in Attawapiskat is now mostly puddles of water atop the ice. The picture was taken by Cathy Elliott who is in Attawapiskat doing a project with the students as a part of a DAREarts program.
