QUEEN’S PARK – Leaders Ledger – In the past, one of the greatest challenges facing elected officials was keeping their constituents up-to-date. Constituents have the right to know how they are being represented and what initiatives their MPP is spearheading.
Fortunately, with the rise of technology in recent years, we are no longer limited in the ways we can communicate and keep our constituents up to date. Internet sites such as MPP Websites, Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube have given political officials inexpensive ways to reach out to their constituents in between Riding Updates and stories in the media. In fact, I would go as far as to suggest that there is no excuse not to keep constituents informed.
Information sharing is only limited by our imaginations. While I may not always have a photo or video camera at each event I attend, I normally post where I am and what I’m doing on my Twitter and Facebook feeds a couple times a day.
Whenever I send out a media release or a statement that information is immediately posted on my Website, with links to the information also appearing on my Twitter and Facebook feed. All of my speeches, questions and statements in Queen’s Park, in addition to many of my speeches in our communities, are posted to my Youtube site almost immediately.
Since being elected I have raised a many issues on your behalf. This includes fighting for healthcare in our region, working to create jobs by speeding up development in the Ring of Fire, standing up for Ontario’s commercial batfish industry, making sure the public is allowed to access crown land for recreational activities, resolving peacefully a snowmobile trail closure near Kenora, and fighting for lower hydro prices for consumers and industry in our region and many other initiatives.
To me, transparency in politics is fundamental. I am doing all that I can to ensure the public is kept up to date of my actions. I have made it very clear from the outset that while I hold my own beliefs and vision for the riding, I am here to represent yours… which is why I am doing my best to work with all parties and am continually soliciting your feedback on issues as they arise.
While everyone may not have access to the Internet, most people now do. If you don’t have access and want to know what I’m doing between riding updates, newspaper articles and columns, I encourage you to call or come by one of my community offices. There, you can view the clips and have all your questions answered.
