THUNDER BAY – Sports – In an exciting game tonight at Fort William Gardens, your Thunder Bay North Stars defeated the Duluth Clydesdales by a final score of 5 – 3. The game started of slowly for the North Stars tonight, but picked up and the team got stronger as the game continued.
The victory puts the North Stars up two games to none over Duluth in the playoff series. The series now shifts to Duluth for Games
Duluth opened the scoring in the first period with a goal by Dillon Mershon at the 7:53 mark. It took until the 14:55 mark of the period before the North Stars got on the scoreboard with a goal from Cary Brown.
With only 3.5 seconds left in the first period, Duluth notched a goal to take a 2-1 lead into the dressing room. Troy Olson scored, assisted by Mark Williams and Jonathan Ringstad.
The second period saw Duluth take what might have been a commanding lead as Dillon Merchon notched his second goal of the night in an unassisted effort at the 13:03 marker. However the North Start countered with a pretty goal at 14:16 scored by Matt Kaarela, assisted by Quinn Rempel and Matthew Alexander.
The third period saw the North Stars come out strong, as Duluth seemed to slow as the game went along. North Stars President David Dubinski commented after the second period that the North Stars were behind during game one after two periods, but came out strong in the third to come from behind.
Dylan Mascarin scored on a powerplay, assisted by Matt Kaarela and Mitchell Fox at the 8:42 time marker to pull even with the Clydesdales. The North Stars then shot ahead with an unassisted goal by Quinn Rempel four minutes later.
Dylan Mascarin put the icing on the cake for the win assisted by Mitchell Fox and Kyle Lapenskie at 17:07.
The win puts the North Stars ahead two games to none. The next two games will be in Duluth. Game five, if needed will be back at the Fort William Gardens on Saturday night.
