School in Sandy Lake Damaged Extensively in Fire

NNLCRIMEbeatSANDY LAKE FN – Crimebeat – On February 19, 2012, at 12:27PM the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Sandy Lake Detachment received an anonymous report about a fire at the local elementary school. The Sandy Lake Fire Department was on scene upon police arrival at the Thomas Fiddler Memorial School. The initial investigation showed that the fire originated in the area of the storage/supply room.

There were no reports of injuries to any persons. However extensive fire, smoke and water damage has occurred at the school.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time. The office of the Fire Marshall is expected to arrive on February 22, 2012 to assist with the investigation.

Further updates will occur as new information becomes available. The Thomas Fiddler Memorial School serves the Sandy Lake First Nation students from Kindergarten to Grade 6.

Sandy Lake First Nation is located approximately 600 km northwest of Thunder Bay.
