THUNDER BAY – The Confederation College Thunderhawks Women’s Hockey team leaves for Winnipeg this Thursday to compete in Manitoba’s Lieutenant Governor’s (LG) Invitational Women’s Hockey Tournament. The team is stopping to practice at the Dryden Memorial Arena at 1 p.m. that same day. Members of local hockey programs and the media have scheduled to visit with the Thunderhawks after the skate. Kyley Engstrom, a recent addition to the roster and former captain of the Dryden Eagles girls’ high school hockey team, will surely be a hit in her hometown.
The Thunderhawks will move on to play an exhibition game against the Eastman Selects Midget AAA girls’ team on Thursday night at the Stony Mountain Arena. Their first LG game takes place at the MTS Iceplex on Friday morning against the Manitoba Women’s Junior Hockey League (MWJHL) Northern Stars. Later in the day, they face the Prairie Blaze, the top-ranked team in the MWJHL. Placement for Saturday’s games will be determined by Friday’s results.
The Confederation College Thunderhawks Women’s Hockey program is in its inaugural year. Its student-athletes benefit from Hockey Canada High Performance 1 level qualified coaches; a certified kinesiologist for off-ice group and personal fitness training and nutritional advice; access to the College’s on-site Fitness Centre; academic advising services and the team’s own administrative support staff.
