THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay North Stars Junior A Hockey Club announce that they have brought in Lonny Bohonos to be their interim coach after the departure of Todd Howarth.
Bohonos played major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League. He then played many years in the American Hockey League for NHL affiliates Syracuse Crunch (Vancouver Canucks) and the St. John’s Maple Leafs (Toronto Maple Leafs). During his professional career he played a total of 70 games for the Vancouver Canucks and 13 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The highlight of his NHL career came in the 1999 playoffs when he was given an opportunity to skate on a scoring line with Matts Sundin. He put up 3 goals and 6 assists in 9 games to help Toronto to the Conference Finals that season. His professional career also took him to play in Europe where his career was ended in an injury during the 2005-2006 season.
Bohonos, a native of Winnipeg, MB, has lived in Thunder Bay since 2006. He has previously coached 14 of the present North Stars players in his tenure as a coach in the Thunder Bay Kings organization. The ownership group of the Thunder Bay North Stars welcome Lonny to the team and wish he and the players well in the remainder of the regular season, throughout the playoffs and along the road to the Dudley Hewitt Cup.
