Updated – Highways East of Thunder Bay Closed due to Snow and Blowing Snow

MARATHON – Updated 3:00PMEST – Snow and blowing snow have caused the Ontario Provincial Police to close Highway 17 between Terrace Bay and White River. The Marathon Detachment of the OPP are advisin drivers that the highway is closed due to poor weather and road conditions. In addition, Highway 11 between Hearst and Longlac has also been closed due to snow conditions.

The westbound lane has now been opened to traffic.

Weather conditions have not impacted many Departures at the Thunder Bay International Airport. However some Arrivals have been impacted by the weather.

Environment Canada advises, “Periods of snow continue today and tonight associated with a large low pressure system moving toward Northern Ontario. Further snowfall amounts of 15 to 20 cm are possible by Tuesday morning. Strong northerly winds this afternoon and evening over regions north of Lake Superior will result in local blowing snow and associated poor visibilities. Hazardous winter travelling conditions can be expected throughout the regions due to the snow and blowing snow:.

The snowfall will gradually taper off from southwest to northeast on Tuesday.
