THUNDER BAY – Lakehead’s wrestling team is holding the “2011 Lakehead Open” this Saturday, October 22 at the CJ Sanders fieldhouse. The action begins at 9 am, with weigh-ins occurring on Friday from 4-6 pm.
This will represent the ‘re-birth’ of a Lakehead open tournament, as it has been 4 years since an open tournament has been hosted by LU. Although most of the wrestlers competing are from the Lakehead team, other wrestlers will compete from Queen’s University, the Sault Ste. Marie region, local high school wrestlers, and local amateurs seeking to test their meddle against the Thunderwolves’.
It is anticipated that university team attendance for the Lakehead Open will grow in years to come, especially with Lakehead’s newest wrestling neighbors in the Laurentian U and U of Winnipeg varsity wrestling teams coming into being this year.
As head coach Brock Curtis says, his team will use this as a practice tournament to get experience wrestling in front of the Thunderdome crowd, “This will be a good experience for our men’s and women’s teams to wrestle in front of the home town crowd and prepare for OUA’s and the CIS tournament.”
Lakehead will once again serve this year as host to the CIS Wrestling championships in February.
Admission will be free for Saturday’s event.
Tournament begins Saturday at 9 am.
Weigh-ins are Friday from 4-6 pm.
