LOVE AND LIGHT SURROUNDS THUNDER BAYS MARY WALKER

Mary Walker is young artistic and extremely creative. If you looked into her eyes a woman beyond her years, stares back at you with an intense and inviting smile.

My mother was really the first one to inspire me to play music, said Mary. When I was a little girl she used to sing and play guitar and at the time was also an accomplished Accordion player. Mary remembers how her mom introduced her to bands like Nirvana and Green Day. It wasn’t until a little over 3 years ago did I start playing the acoustic.

Hanging out in karaoke bars and practicing in front of an audience allowed her to get herself out there and become more comfortable on stage.

She explained having the opportunity to sing at Open Mic Night @ The Bean Fiend, a local business that’s one of her favorite hang outs when she wants to relax and enjoy a great evening.” I reconnected with an old high school colleague there after Open Mic Night and she was also establishing herself as a solo artist and I asked her if she would teach me my first song on the guitar . I was so excited, she said smiling, the song was for my mom’s birthday and I practiced so hard and then performed it at her party. I’ve been playing ever since.

Mary graduated The Child and Youth Worker program @ Con College and describe how it was her stepping stone to the road of self discovery , “I broke off a 7 Year relationship so at that time I was trying to redefine myself and the things that I believed in so much and loved dearly.”

Writing was Mary’s positive coping as most acoustic players are inspired by break ups and deep emotion. I’m very passionate about my writing and it makes me happy. Her love for underground hip hop and how they express themselves and their stories through that style of music has greatly contributed to finding her own style since she started listening.

My advice to young musicians new to the scene is, “Do what you love. Don’t worry about what others think or say. Do it for you and yeah…get yourself out there.

Youtube is a great way to showcase to others your music”. Mary currently has over 17 videos up on her channel that allows more variety to viewers who visit.

Facebook is also another important networking resource to up and comers who don’t have the money to market.

Eventually Mary wants to move to Ireland and explore her roots. ”I love to travel a lot so I can see this taking me on some crazy adventure once I have my passport and visa, the sky is the limit, she laughs. I’m not worried about where my music is going to go. I do it because I love it and it makes me feel good. I love the fact that I can just pick up my guitar and go to any random park and play for just me, or anybody who’ll listen.

Always remember, “OUR FIRST LOVE AND LAST LOVE IS SELF LOVE”. You need to find yourself and who you are. If you don’t love yourself it’s hard to love others.

Peace and Love- Mary Walker.
