Jack Layton To Step Down as Party Leader Temporarily

breaking newsTHUNDER BAY – NDP Leader Jack Layton stated in Toronto today “I have a new cancer”. A tired and gaunt sounding Layton said he was feeling that he was struggling with stiffness and pain as the House of Commons was winding down for the summer.

The NDP leader stated he is doing well in his fight against Prostrate Cancer but a new cancer is present. He needs, he stated to focus fully on the fight against this health issue.

Mr. Layton will be receiving treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto.

Layton said his is taking a short leave of absence as leader of the New Democratic Party.

The Party will appoint an interim leader. Layton has asked that Hull-Aylmer MP Nichol Turmel, the national chair of the caucus will be his choice for an interim leader. The NDP caucus will meet and make a decision on the interim leader.

Layton spoke or returning to the House of Commons, but also seemed to be offering a political overview of his leadership.

The NDP leader was accompanied by his wife Olivia Chow and the NDP Party President.
