THUNDER BAY – Effective today, Tbaytel is rebranding its 3G HSPA+ Network and will now refer to it as a 4G HSPA+ Network. On December 6, 2010 the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), an organization that defines network classifications within the telecommunications industry, expanded the definition of a 4G wireless mobile network. Initially, the ITU had a very narrow definition for 4G networks, but, in December, expanded it to now include HSPA+ networks (networks like Tbaytel’s current 3G HSPA+ Network). As a result of the new definition by the ITU, Tbaytel will now refer to its network as a 4G HSPA+ Network.
“Other carriers within the Mobility industry with networks similar to Tbaytel have chosen to refer to their respective networks as 4G,” said Don Campbell, President & CEO Tbaytel. “In order for consumers to accurately compare Tbaytel’s network to those of other carriers, it is important for Tbaytel to follow suit and rename its network accordingly.”
“The network itself remains the same and is merely a network reclassification by the ITU,” added Campbell. “This reclassification will have no impact on the customer experience. Tbaytel continues to evolve its network in 2011 in its capabilities, speed and regional coverage.”
In the future, Tbaytel’s website and all advertising and external communications will refer to the Tbaytel HSPA+ network as 4G HSPA+.
