THUNDER BAY – “Hip Hop is alive and well in Thunder Bay,” says Rogue (aka Al Corbett) one of Thunder Bay’s leading hip hop pioneers in the City. For one night he unites THE EAST SIDE and the WEST SIDE communities into a face-t- face emcee (rapper) Fight of Epic Proportions.
Rogue says that the structure & format of the upcoming battle will run very much the same as the infamous 8 Mile movie featuring Eminem where two rappers face off head to head in a classic freestyle rap battle. The excitement during a battle is high, the crowds’ oohhs and ahhs and the intention of the battles is to insult your opponent more cleverly than he or she insults you.Appointed judges will score the rappers and the audience response also plays a role in the scoring.“It’s been a number of years since Maddpsyense and I hosted the Urban Sunday Battles that remain the biggest still,” says Rogue. He goes on to describe how freestyle rap more commonly refers to rap lyrics that are improvised through a cappella or with instrumental beats that’s performed with no previously composed lyrics, ‘off the top of the head’.
Dropping lines that seem to hurt are a huge part of it, especially when you know they are close friends pulling out the dirt they have on one another. Contrary to popular belief there tends to be no violent altercations and the only resulting issue that lingers is the rapper working harder on his freestyles to defeat the champ next round.
“The Prize Fight”, the ultimate rap battle taking place on Sunday Feb 20th at Crocks promises to be a night of entertaining battle rounds and performances followed by Rogue and Dystrakted in DJ mode laying down the hottest classics, the current hip hop and club tracks that you won’t hear anywhere else.YOU CANT MISS IT.Doors open 8pm – you must be 19+ to attend.
