THUNDER BAY – The Women’s Volleyball team will return to action this weekend at the Thunderdome, playing host to the Waterloo Warriors on Friday and the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday. Subway is sponsoring Friday evening’s match, as the first 200 students to purchase a ticket from the LUSU office will receive a free 6″ sandwich voucher for Subway restaurants.
The last time Lakehead played Waterloo, they were defeated 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 28-26). Vanessa Chorkawy had 14 points for LU in the loss. So far this season, Waterloo is 4-7 only 1-4 on the road. They are led on the attack by sophomores Meaghan Loveday and Joanna Meltzer, who are averaging 3.1 and 2.7 points per set this year. Waterloo is currently second in the country in digs, with 17.53 per set.
Against Laurier last season, Lakehead was beat 3-1 (25-14, 24-26, 25-13, 25-19) at the Wilfred Laurier Athletic Complex. Lakehead’s Jorie Daymond (Ottawa, ON) had 14 points in that match. This season, however, Laurier is 2-9 so far, and 1-5 on the road, so Lakehead would like to get some revenge for last year’s defeat. Laurier is also among the leaders in the country in service errors and ball handling errors, so the tough-serving Lakehead team should certainly have a fighting chance to secure a victory.
Friday and Saturday’s games are slated for 7:00 pm
