THUNDER BAY – It is Thunder Bay’s birthday today! It was in 1970 that the two cities, Port Arthur and Fort William amalgamated to form the City of Thunder Bay.

It is a quiet birthday for our community however, as there are no official celebrations planned.

That should be something that should change in our community. Perhaps in 2012 and beyond, at the Waterfront on January 1st we should host a community event for families that celebrates our city’s birthday.

Perhaps it is time to start planning for Thunder Bay’s 50th birthday now too? That event will happen in 2020, and would be a great time to reflect on where we are, and where we want to be in our future.

Looking at the New Year’s Eve celebrations from around the world, Thunder Bay seems far quieter than it should on that night. That isn’t a bad thing, however what it does is leave people with fewer choices for a family type of celebration.

Maybe in Thunder Bay we should be celebrating our community’s birthday on January 1. If there were enough planned for that day, it could help bring everyone together.

Anyhow, Happy Birthday Thunder Bay!

May the coming year bring you great achievement.
