THUNDER BAY – It is the first day of winter. However in Thunder Bay, thoughts are staying with golf for Dustin Wilson. The young professional has returned to the Thunder Bay region after leaving Thunder Bay at age 19.
“I just moved back to Thunder Bay to open a Core Golf Academy dedicating it to the growth of junior golf in the community and beyond,” states Wilson. “I have many great things going on for the future of junior golf in Thunder Bay. I am also running a Xmas break junior golf camp”.
Wilson shares, “I am from Thunder Bay born and raised and moved to Toronto at the age of 19 to pursue a golf career. I never had the opportunity of great coaching or any structured programs to help me as a youth, so I had to do it on my own in the GTA. I grew up playing AAA hockey, and like every boys dream in Thunder Bay to make it, but unfortunately that didn’t happen”.
“Until I turned pro at the age of 19 I never realized that I should of pursed golf instead of hockey at a young age. Wilson says it was a lack of the developmental programs in the community for golf.
“That is why you see all these NHL players from the city. They are a result of a structured program with tons of mentors and community support. As for golf there is very little too none of that kind of support in the community,” Wilson asserts.
“That is about to change”, states Wilson. “I have almost 10 years of experience in the heart of the GTA working with some of the leaders in the golf industry developing young players and getting them NCAA scholarships”.
“I work for a company called Core Golf Academy (www.coregolfacademy.com) We have academies in the GTA and Orlando Florida where Sean Foley our PGA tour coach coaches our Canadian kids in the winter months as they train to obtain NCAA scholarships,” shares Wilson. “We have raised the bar in Canada for what needs to be done for developing the future of Canadian junior golfers,” continues Wilson. “You may recognize Sean`s name from coaching players like Sean Ohair, Hunter Mahan, Stephen Ames and recently Tiger Woods.
“Just to highlight a few points about the “Core Golf Academy” and myself returning to the community to open a first class developmental academy dedicating in to Junior Golf in the community”.
A little about the Core Golf Academy; Core Golf Junior Academy in Orlando, Florida is a full time Junior Developmental program that allows junior golfers from Canada to train in the winter months and compete against the top ranked players in the US. Our Academy has an extremely high reputation among NCAA college coaches as our students are actively getting recruited and obtaining scholarships.
