THUNDER BAY – EcoSuperior and Active Transportation Thunder Bay will host a free Safe Cycling Workshop on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at Vickers Park. The “Pedal Power: Everyday Safe Cycling Skills” workshop starts at 6:30 pm near the archway intersection at Vickers Park. Admission is free and the workshop is open to anyone with an interest in cycling for recreation or transportation. Pre-registration is required and participants must bring their own bicycle and helmet.

“With the new dedicated bike lanes and shared lanes across the City, this workshop is a great way for cyclists to familiarize themselves with the rules of the road and safe riding,” said Workshop Leader Emma Kempe, Active Transportation Program Assistant for the City of Thunder Bay and EcoSuperior.

The goal of the workshop is to increase participant’s knowledge of safe cycling skills and to help them feel confident cycling on Thunder Bay streets. Topics covered include:
§ How to Fit a Bike and Helmet correctly
§ How to Choose the Proper Clothes and Equipment for Cycling, and
§ How to Conduct a Pre-ride Bike Safety Check.

The workshop will also address cycling in Thunder Bay’s new bike lanes and shared lanes, and obeying the Highway Traffic Act as it applies to cyclists.  Participants will practice basic cycling skills such as mounting, dismounting, braking, shifting, signaling, and shoulder checking.

To register, contact Emma at 625-2295 or email ekempe@thunderbay.ca.
