THUNDER BAY – May is Sexual Assault Prevention Month in Ontario. The Ontario Government are helping eighteen not-for-profit groups in the ridings of Thunder Bay-Atikokan and Thunder Bay-Superior North, in an effort to help make life safer for women and children.
These organizations focus on raising public awareness, training staff and offering information, workshops and shelter to victims of domestic violence, who are overwhelmingly women.
“Our government remains strongly committed to helping women and children affected by violence and abuse. While I am proud of our government’s accomplishments, domestic violence is a complex problem. We must all be part of the solution,” stated Michael Gravelle, the MPP for Thunder Bay Superior North, and Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry.
Gravelle’s comments were echoed by Thunder Bay Atikokan MPP Bill Mauro. “Our government continues to provide supports to women and children affected by violence and abuse. Not-for-profit organizations work hard to help women and children, and we are proud to partner with them in this ongoing effort,” stated Mauro.
This year, organizations in Thunder Bay-Atikokan and Thunder Bay-Superior North will receive a total of $53,300 to run programs and buy resources and equipment. The grants are provided through the Violence Against Women Prevention Initiative.
