QUEEN’S PARK – NDP Health Critic and Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas tried one last time this afternoon to get two central figures in the $1-billion eHealth Ontario scandal – Sarah Kramer and Alan Hudson – to appear before the Legislature’s Public Accounts Committee.
“We need to get to the bottom of this so we can fix past mistakes and move forward but the Liberal MPPs on the committee won’t let us and have blocked us at every turn,” Gélinas said.
Gélinas brought forward a motion calling for a Speaker’s Warrant to be issued. The warrant would have forced Kramer and Hudson to appear. However, for the third time, the Liberal government used its committee majority to block the motion.
Gélinas and other opposition members of the committee also called on key staffers in the Premier’s office to appear to explain their role in the eHealth scandal. Documents obtained through a Freedom of Information request show the staffers were mentioned in an email exchange between Hudson and Kramer and met with eHealth consultants and lobbyists.
“The McGuinty Liberal government is trying its best to sweep this investigation under the carpet," charges Gélinas. Earlier today during Question Period, Gélinas asked Premier Dalton McGuinty to explain his MPPs’ repeated efforts to block appearances by Kramer and Hudson.
"Is the Premier afraid that their appearance would reveal a close relationship with his office?" she asked.
The Nanos Poll issued earlier today shows that the McGuinty Liberals have continued to fall in public support. Pollster Nik Nanos has pointed to the eHealth scandal and the massive deficit as reasons for the drop in support.
