Your Northern Trained Doctor is Top Ranked

THUNDER BAY - If you look on the wall of your Doctor's office and his or her diploma is from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, then you are in good hands. The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) is pleased to announce that the first graduating class of students from its M.D. program achieved above average scores on their Medical Council of Canada (MCC) qualifying examinations. NOSM ranked sixth among Canada’s 17 medical schools in overall performance.

This exceptional ranking for Canada’s newest medical school underscores the effectiveness of NOSM’s distinctive model of distributed, community-engaged medical education program.

NOSM’s Charter Class also ranked first among all Canadian medical schools in the category of clinical decision making, which attests to the high quality of clinical training NOSM learners receive from medical practitioners in the culturally diverse settings of Northern Ontario.

Above-average standing in the category of family medicine, as well as in several other categories, reflects the School’s emphasis on graduating physicians capable of meeting community needs.

Dr. Roger Strasser, NOSM Dean, was delighted by the MCC exam results of NOSM’s first graduating class. “Once again our medical students have demonstrated performance on par with students in other Canadian medical schools. The outstanding Medical Council of Canada examination results of NOSM’s Charter Class, particularly in the clinical decision making category, testifies to the high calibre of this class, as well as the high standards of training they receive within NOSM’s M.D. model and from physician clinical teachers across Northern Ontario.”

Dr. Joel Lanphear, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education and Senior Associate Dean of NOSM’s West Campus, shares Dr. Strasser’s sentiments.  “The successful performance of NOSM’s first graduating medical students reaffirms the effectiveness of NOSM’s unique curriculum and its ability to deliver first-rate
medical education. These test results also demonstrate that wide exposure to practice opportunities in the culturally diverse communities of Northern Ontario will produce physicians with the clinical skills level necessary to meet community needs.”

The qualifying examinations administered by the MCC are a requirement of physician certification.

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine is a pioneering faculty of medicine.  The School is a joint initiative of Lakehead and Laurentian Universities with main campuses in Thunder Bay and Sudbury, and multiple teaching and research sites across Northern Ontario.  By educating skilled physicians and undertaking health research suited to community needs, the School will become a cornerstone of community health care in Northern Ontario.
