Remembrance Day 2009

Written by NNL Staff

THUNDER BAY - World War One, the "war to end all wars" came to a halt at 11:00 on November 11 1918. The Armistice came into effect to halt hostilities on that day. The first Remembrance Day was brought forward by King George on the first anniversary of the day the fighting stopped in 1919.

World War One, sadly has not ended war. World War Two followed in 1939, with the Korean War in the 1950s, and the Vietnam War in the 1960s and early 1970s. Today troops are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In Thunder Bay, through the years, many, far too many of our community's young people have fought and died in wars.

Each of those young lives lost in the defense of our freedoms and rights represent a price paid to ensure that our lives can be free.

While that price is a heavy one, as often said, "freedom don't come free".

Lest we forget!
