THUNDER BAY – “Aboriginal people will get the skills they need to find and keep jobs as a result of projects funded by the Government of Canada”, said Greg Rickford, Member of Parliament for Kenora. The Government of Canada is providing over $9.5 million for these projects through its Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy. The Strategy is part of a government-wide approach to help First Nations, Métis and Inuit secure sustainable and meaningful employment.

“Our government is helping Aboriginal people in Ontario get the skills and training they need,” continued Rickford. “Investing in training is one of the most important measures our government is taking to protect Canada and its workers today, while strengthening the long-term competitiveness of our economy.”

“Matawa First Nations Management will receive support to continue projects that will help Aboriginal people in the Thunder Bay area gain access to labour market programs and employment services”, added Rickford.

“As a result, significant opportunities will be created for the 10 First Nations served by Matawa in the areas of mining and mineral exploration, and hydro transmission line development, as well as some on-reserve employment in the fields of nursing, policing and teaching. The projects will also create strong partnerships between government, industry, educational and training institutions, and community service providers”.
