volcano-facebookTHUNDER BAY – The British Foreign Office advises, “Restrictions in UK controlled airspace remain in place until 0100 UK time Monday 19 April. If you are planning to fly into or out of UK airports, check with your airline for the latest news.”

As the airspace remains virtually empty stranding travellers and business, people impacted by the situation are seeking information.

One important tool not impacted by the volcanic ash fallout in Europe, and around the world is the Internet. Social Networking is taking its role in the ongoing issues surrounding the volcanic ash from the eruption of the volcano in Iceland.

On Facebook, people have formed a group titled “The Volcanic Ash Cloud” and are sharing their experiences as well as sharing requests for rides, and information.

On Twitter, if you search out #roadsharing, #getmehome, or #putmeup people are sharing information as well.

Of course it is still important for people to use the same common sense for online help that they would use offline. Keep in mind that if you are accepting a ride, that safety is an issue to keep at the forefront.

Increasingly, however, through the Internet, people are able to reach out to help each other during times of crisis, or problem. It is one of the ways that the newest technology can help bring out the best in people.

In addition, gathering information on the ongoing situtuation, via the Internet is faster, and often more up-to-date than traditional media.

One possible downside to the rush for information is that online many websites are overwhelmed. Others have taken main pages offline, and put up simple sites.

For travellers seeking to fly out of Great Britain to North America, or to European destinations, the British Foreign Office states, “British Airways says all flights to and from London airports on Sunday 18 April have been cancelled. Check BA website.
Airport operator BAA warns passengers not to travel to its airports – Heathrow, Stansted, Southampton, Edinburgh, Glasgow & Aberdeen. See BAA website for updates.

You can find more information on the situation at individual UK airports on the DirectGov website.

Over 20 European countries are affected by air restrictions with many closing airpace completely. As the situation is changing please check with your airline for the latest details.”

If you have information you would like to share please put it in the comments section.
