THUNDER BAY - The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s 1945 “Mynarski Memorial” Lancaster Mk 10 Bomber will pay a special visit to the Thunder Bay Airport from July 27-29, 2010 thanks to the support of Thunder Bay International Airports Authority, Confederation College Aviation Centre of Excellence and the Northwestern Ontario Aviation Heritage Centre.

The Lancaster Bomber will arrive in Thunder Bay on July 27th at approx. 12:45 pm and do some fly-bys of the airport (weather permitting) before locating to the College aircraft apron on the North side of the Airport. After the Lancaster arrives and is secured she will be opened to the media and local dignitaries for inspection from 1:30 to 3:30pm followed by a meet and greet with the flight crew.
On day 2 of the visit (July 28th) the Lancaster will be open to the general public for aircraft tours starting at 12:00 noon and ending at 5:00 pm. There will be no charge for admission but we would like to ask you to bring can food donations for the Confederation College Student Food Bank. The Lancaster crew will be asking for a $5 donation to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum to tour inside the Lancaster aircraft and will also have Lancaster merchandise and memorabilia available for purchase to help raise funds to cover the cost of Lancaster flight operations.
We hope you will take the time to come out and support these worthy causes and see and touch this very rare, special, iconic WW II RCAF aircraft – one of only two flying Lancaster aircraft remaining in the world today.

  1. Gerry says:

it is a super cool airplane, well worth seeing!

  2. Tom Parsons says:

Can hardly wait to see a plane that helped secure our freedom.

  3. Jim S says:

saw the one come in during the 80′s and couldn’t believe how loud ONE was, let alone hundreds flying over… I’d advise watching it from behind the Airlane hotel, it’ll go right overhead.

  4. Albert Wrigglesworth says:

My father in law flew as navigator in one during WW2. He’s 89 now.

  5. Bob Hammond says:

I am very glad to see the Lanc coming back into Thunder Bay after a very long absence. I am very disappointed that it’s arrival has not been promoted more, especially as two of the original crew were from Port Arthur which is now part of Thunder Bay.

  6. Paul Strong says:

My father was a flight engineer who flew, among many other planes, the Lanc. I’ll be there with my grandchildren to revisit a piece of family history. (Never mind hundreds; how about a thousand bomber sound?)

  7. michelle says:

I am so excited for this and so it my daughter. It is really sad these events are not promoted more in Thunder Bay. It should be a big event to remember our veterans. So sad!

  8. James Murray says:

    Bob,

The goal on NetNewsledger.com on events like this is to get them out there before they happen.

By the time the event is over, and there is a picture in the paper or some video on the news, people have lost the opportunity to attend themselves.

That is why this story has been put up before the event.

What do you know about the two crews from Port Arthur that you could share with our reader?

    James

  9. Jess says:

I hope I can see this. My grandfather was an airgunner on one with squadron 433, Skipton-on-Swale. He passed away 3 years ago, so it would be really meaningful to see this and get some pictures to share with my family back home.

  10. Randy says:

Went over today and enjoyed the whole thing with my son an aircraft eng.tech who will likely never get another chance to touch one.Anyone know what the vra (vrOa) on the side of the aircraft stands for as I forgot to ask.

  11. Heather says:

We were so excited to go, my grandfather was RCAF and involved in training during the war. I wanted to show my sons a part of our family history. Unfortunately the event was poorly organized, we waited in line for over an hour only to be told I couldn’t get on with my two young sons. Also, they closed the line early and asked people who had already been in line for several minutes to leave.
