THUNDER BAY – Exploring significant historical, architectural, and cultural sites in Thunder Bay will be a digital experience for 2020. Beginning Sept. 1, through Nov. 30, experience the virtual  Doors Open Thunder Bay which incorporates video, photography, archival images, web exhibits, and more that bring to life local meaningful places and stories. As Thunder Bay celebrates ‘One City. Fifty Years.’ many of this year’s sites showcase our community’s progress while also reflecting upon our past. This digital experience for 2020 can be accessed through the City of Thunder Bay website and is hosted online through the Doors Open Ontario website along with 38 other communities throughout the province.

“Digital Doors Open Thunder Bay offers the opportunity to delve even deeper into the unique sites being featured,” said Laurie Abthorpe, Heritage Researcher. “Through a combination of digital media opportunities we have been able to present content that offers a richer experience – one that will live well beyond our traditional in-person events.”

Doors Open Thunder Bay 2020 includes 11 participating sites plus two additional offerings. The 11 participating sites all feature video vignettes produced by local cinematographer Damien Gilbert from Epica Pictures.

  • Harry Kirk Archives and Records Centre
  • Thunder Bay Tourist Pagoda
  • Open Mind Interiors (Former Mary J. L. Black Library)
  • Mary J. L. Black Community Hub, Thunder Bay Public Library
  • Fort William National Historic Site
  • Courthouse Hotel
  • Saint Joseph’s Indian Residential School Memorial
  • Masonic Hall – Shuniah Lodge No. 287
  • Thunder Bay Museum
  • Sleeping Giant Brewing Company

Additions sites featured include:

  • Thunder Bay’s Self-guided Heritage Walking Tours
  • Sleeping Giant Provincial Park

Doors Open Thunder Bay is presented by the City of Thunder Bay’s Heritage Advisory Committee coordinated by the Doors Open Thunder Bay planning committee.
