Bachelors helped the ladies raise a record $94kTHUNDER BAY – Healthbeat – The final tally is in – and it’s a record breaker! Last night’s Elekta Bachelors for Hope Charity Auction raised $94,408 – the highest amount in the event’s 14-year history – bringing the 14-year total to $705,934. The event supports the Northern Cancer Fund of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.

“This year the 10 volunteer bachelors and event committee had ambiguous goals to raise more money than ever before, and they did it! Every year we have a dedicated group of bachelors that work hard to raise funds to support the fight against breast cancer—this year was no exception,” said Athena Kreiner, Senior Development Officer at the Health Sciences Foundation.

Last night, over 470 women attended to enjoy a gourmet meal, entertainment and the auction of 10 of Thunder Bay’s most eligible bachelors complete with fabulous date packages. “It’s easy to see why this is one of Thunder Bay’s most popular ladies-only events,” said event production chair Deborah Emery. “It’s so more than a fabulous girls’ night out. It contributes to a very serious issue in a meaningful way.”

Of course, the success of the event depends on recruiting Thunder Bay’s most eligible bachelors. This year, Ken Magill was one of them. Magills’s date package included a 7-night getaway for two in Napa Valley, courtesy of Elekta.

“All of the bachelors work hard to prepare for this,” explained Magill. “But by volunteering for this event we are supporting breast cancer research and healthcare advancements that directly impact our families and loved ones. It’s undeniable that all of our hard work paid off last night.”

100% of the funds raised by the Elekta Bachelors for Hope Charity Auction remain in Northwestern Ontario to increase breast cancer awareness through education, increase access to breast cancer screening, improve breast cancer treatment, and support world-class cancer research.

Along with the volunteer bachelors, the Elekta Bachelors for Hope Charity Auction’s success relies upon committee members, sponsors, volunteers and attendees.

“It’s amazing to see so many people all supporting the same cause—Northwestern Ontario’s fight against breast cancer,” said volunteer bachelor Ken Magill. “In one night, we not only raised significant dollars towards the Northern Cancer Fund of the Health Sciences Foundation, but we all raised awareness. We can all be proud of that.”

Because of advances in breast cancer awareness, screening, diagnosis and research, today, 9 out of 10 women will live for at least 10 years after diagnosis. Together, we are making Hope possible.
